Important - Google Changes Access to Third-Party Services:
The District allows students to access third-party services with their Google Workspace for Education account (i.e., “Sign in with Google”). We utilize tools like our firewall, GoGuardian, and Managed Methods to block resources to remain SOPPA, COPPA, and FERPA compliant. Access to these third-party services with student Google accounts authorizes the disclosure of data, as requested by the third-party services. Typically, this includes the student's name and email address.
Beginning October 23, 2023, Google will no longer allow third-party access to student accounts without explicitly verifying and trusting the specific service. To comply with Google’s monitoring of third-party services, access to these services will be blocked by default by Google. For instance, if ScreenCastify (which uses a “Sign in with Google” option) were not “trusted,” students would be blocked from accessing the service using their Google credentials. Here is an example of a service that uses Google authentication.
The Educational Technology Department has gone through a long list of third-party services our students and staff have recently used and configured each of them, so we are compliant for the October 23rd deadline.
Please be aware! If students access a third-party service not configured, Google will block the attempt and provide the following notice. Students can “request” the service using the circled button below. Still, they will not have access to it until it is allowed by the Educational Technology Department using our Google Admin Console.
The EdTech Department has processes to monitor requests, but we need your help. If you or your students are trying to access a resource and it is blocked, please email edtech@molineschools.org. If you are anticipating using a third-party application or service that requires a Google sign-in, please plan ahead and test it with a student or two ahead of time. If you do get a blocked page, please indicate if Google is blocking the resource or if GoGuardian is blocking it. In some classes, we may have to allow access to both. Below is what a GoGuardian blocked page will look like.
Please email edtech@molineschools.org with any questions. Further information about this change in Google’s policy can be found here.
